Mission hosts Eagle Classic CC meet

Progress Times photo by Luciano GuerraMission High School was the place to be Saturday morning for freshmen, junior varsity and varsity boys and girls cross country runners from across the Mid and Upper Valley. Following are each of the Big 6 schools’ top varsity and junior varsity finishers at the Mission High School Eagle Classic cross country meet.

Mission High School

Mission’s Rod Santa Ana took 10th place with a time of 16:40 in the varsity boys 5K race for the Eagles while Michelle Flores’ time of 16:26 earned her 11th place in the varsity girls 5K race for the Lady Eagles. The Eagles’ varsity boys team took 4th place with a score of 135 with the Lady Eagles’ varsity team placing 6th with a score of 155.

As the head cross country coach of the host Mission Eagles, David Munson was pleased with the progress his runners are exhibiting and with how well the meet went Saturday.

"The kids ran well,” said Munson. “We are improving each week as we approach district. Our goal is to be running our best for the district meet which falls on Oct. 27th. I was really happy with all the support from staff and coaches to make the Mission Invitational a big success. There was a lot of Eagle Pride out there.”

Juarez Lincoln High School

In the varsity boys 5K race, Mitchel Lara finished in fourth place for the Huskies with a time of 16:24. Martin Baez finished in 12th place with a time of 16:41 and Enrique Palomares came in 17th with a time of 16:56. In the girls’ 5K race, Angie Cano finished in 19h place for the Lady Huskies with a time of 21:06.The Juarez Lincoln varsity boys team finished in 2nd place with a score of 74 while the Lady Huskies’ varsity girls team finished in 9th place with a score of 251.

In the junior varsity boys 5K race, the top Juarez Lincoln boys were Andres Castillo who finished 2nd with a time of 17:51, Florentino Castillo finished 3rd with a time of 17:52, Ramon Torres finished 13th with a time of 18:42 and Saul Banda finished 19th with a time of 19:01. The Huskies’ junior varsity boys team took 1st place with a score of 67.

Palmview High School

Jose Jaime and Jonathan Hernandez were the top two finishers in the varsity boys 5K race for Palmview High School. Jaime and Hernandez tied for 5th place with identical times of 16:26. Mario Guerrero finished in 15th place with a time of 16:51 and Christian Marmolejo took 19th place with a time of 16:58 for the Lobos. In the varsity girls 5K race, Lady Lobos’ top finishers were Nayla Flores 14th place with a time of 20:43 and Natalie Flores 16th place with a time of 20:57. The Palmview varsity boys team finished in 3rd place with a score of 79 while the Lady Lobos’ varsity girls team finished in 7th place with a score of 170.

In the junior varsity boys 5K race, Ezequiel Cuellar finished in 9th place with a time of 18:28 and Justin Cano finished in 10th place with a time of 18:37 for the Lobos.

Veterans Memorial High School

Veterans Memorial’s G.J. Reyna was the only top 20 finisher for the Patriots in the varsity boys 5K race with a time of 16:32. Reyna’s time earned him 9th place. Andrea Leal took 7th place for the varsity Lady Patriots with a time of 20:01. The Patriots’ varsity boys team took 8th place with a score of 176 while the Lady Patriots varsity team took 5th place with a score of 138.

In the junior varsity girls 2 mile race, Noemi Duron finished in 20th place with a time of 13:09. The Lady Patriots junior varsity team finished in 5th place with a score of 234 while the VMHS boys junior varsity team took 10th place with a score of 345.

Sharyland High School

Sharyland’s Bernie Nino was the only top 20 finisher for the Rattlers’ junior varsity boys team. Nino’s time of 18:56 earned him 18th place for the Rattlers. Brittany Martinez and Marianna Acosta tied for 14th place with identical times of 14:55 while Victoria Luna took 19th place with a time of 13:08 for the junior varsity Lady Rattlers. Sharyland’s junior varsity boys team took 5th place with a score of 143 while the Lady Rattlers’ junior varsity team finished in 4th place with a score of 103.
