Last year the Rattlers gave up the district crown they won two years ago. They want it back. That’s one of the main objectives of the tough schedule that Sharyland cross country head coach Joe González has put together.

“The season was created as a tough season, and as a hard schedule,” said González. “We’ve been traveling a lot this year, from the Rio Grande Valley Classic to the UTSA Invitational. This week we travel to Corpus Christi. It’s been real tough and we haven’t had one easy meet.”

After five meets this season, the Rattlers haven't had much to write home about. That’s because one of the main objectives is to reclaim the district title, hence the tough schedule.

“We started out not running so many meets, but I feel we’re at a point right now that we’re scratching the surface and getting to the real big meets where it really counts in the season,” said 18-year-old senior co-captain Gabriel Rodríguez. “Our whole goal is to prepare for the district meet. That’s something we’ve been working for. It’ll be tough, but we have enough to work with.”

The Rattlers opened the 2012 season on Aug. 25 at the McAllen Rowe Invitational and have participated in four more meets to date. Their most recent meet was on Sept. 22 at the PSJA Memorial Flying W’s Invitational.

Sharyland will participate in the Islander Splash meet at Corpus Christi on Sept. 29, and has two more tune ups scheduled before the Oct. 20 district meet at La Joya Juárez-Lincoln.

“We’ve been preparing ourselves running big meets,” said 17-year-old junior co-captain José Ángel González. “I’ve seen the team getting better. We’re getting to the weeks where it’s getting to be crunch time, and we’ve been really pushing. I think we’ll do well.

“The other teams have gotten a lot better,” added the junior. “We want to reclaim our district crown. That’s one of our main goals for this season.”
