MISSION – Sharyland swept its fourth match in five attempts Tuesday, September 11 after the Lady Rattlers defeated an energetic Donna 25-20, 25-13, 25-16.
Senior outside hitter Elise Smith fired two shots for game points in the opening and second sets to give the Lady Rattlers a 2-0 lead. Smith finished the match with 11 kills, 22 digs, and five aces.
“It was a fun game,” said first-year Lady Rattlers head coach Laura Cavazos. “I think we made a lot improvement on defense, and that’s what we wanted to continue to see, and I think we did that.”
“She’s (Smith) one of our go-to hitters and she’s really emerged,” Cavazos added. “She’s getting into that leadership role. She has six great players around her that help her accomplish that, but once we get our middles going it opens a lot of stuff up for her on the outside and she plays great defense.”
Teaming up with Smith was senior outside hitter Kiki Honrubia, who added 11 kills, eight digs, one block, and one ace to help lead Sharyland to its fourth district victory in five tries. The Lady Rattlers improved to 4-1 in District 30-5A.
Sharyland’s victory was the fourth time this season that they’ve swept their opponents in three games. The Lady Rattlers’ only district loss this season was to Edinburg Economedes in five matches on Sept. 1.
“After we lost to Economedes, we decided that we needed to come out and show everyone we are the No. 1 team in the Valley, and that we can win in three games,” Honrubia said. “Our team goal was to beat every team in three. Start strong, finish strong, and get out fast. Unfortunately, we’ve gone to four and five games in the tournament and against Economedes, but we want to prove to everyone that we can win in three.”
The match also marked a rematch against Donna, Sharyland head coach Cavazos’ former team. Cavazos coached Donna in 2011, her first head coaching experience.
“It’s tough, but it’s good to still have them in the district,” Cavazos said. “I coached them the whole season last year and I made good relationships last year. I like to see that they are improving and doing well. They were coming out pretty strong and we had to match their intensity.”
Last weekend, Sharyland defeated Edinburg 25-16, 25-18, 25-15. Smith had 15 kills, 13 digs, one block, and three aces. Honrubia had nine kills, 13 digs, and two aces. Senior setter Sara Ramon also had a big game with 23 assists, five digs, and one ace.
The Lady Rattlers’ upcoming matches will be away at La Joya Palmview on Sept. 15 at noon and against undefeated Edinburg North at Sharyland Gymnasium on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
“We’ve got some tough games coming up against Palmview and Edinburg North so we have our eye on them, and we want to come out prepared,” Cavazos said. “In the gym we continue to work on what we need to do. Today against Donna we had a couple of errors, but we got a lot of kills so we can’t be upset about that.”
