For the boys and girls soccer teams of Juarez-Lincoln, bi-district was an ease – purely because they were given a first round bye. For others, like the boys and girls squad of Sharyland, bi-district was an ease – purely because they were that much better than the competition. All four teams are playing this week in the next playoff round.
Yes, the two teams from Shary took down their first-round opponents by a combined score of 8-0. The Lady Rattlers scored five goals against Laredo Martin while their male counterparts scored three in their shutout over Laredo LBJ. Victoria Valadez led the Lady Rattlers with the team’s first two goals.
The win by Head Coach JJ Lopez’s ladies’squad, set them up for a rematch with Harlingen South. That area game was played last night after press time. The Lady Hawks have eliminated Sharyland in the past three area rounds, including last year’s 3-2 decision. Watch for the game results online at www.progresstimes.net.
The boys team will be playing Edinburg Economedes after their win on Monday night. Daniel Garcia scored two of his team’s three goals. In their bi-district game, Economedes took down Hanna via a shootout. The victory ensured that Sharyland would not have to play Hanna after being eliminated by the Eagles in last year’s post season.
Benefitting from their bi-district byes, both Juarez-Lincoln’s girls and boys teams played and beat their Mercedes counterparts. The girls won 1-0 behind sophomore Ana Cobix lone goal. The boys took home an easy 5-1 victory, benefiting from the outstanding play of Luis Guerra’s two goals. Delber Rivera, Moises Morin and Daniel Alvarez each scored once.
The Juarez-Lincoln girls played Valley View last night at home after press time. Watch for an update on that game at www.progresstimes.net.
The Huskies boys soccer team is cued up to play Weslaco in their sectional playoff game Saturday. The game will be start at 7 p.m. at the LJISD Football Stadium.
Of course, not all were winners from this past week. Both the Veterans Memorial boys and girls lost their bi-district games. Mission and La Joya boys did as well.
The Patriot boys lost big to Weslaco East, 4-1. William Proctor’s squad had the benefit of a bi-district bye, but the Wildcats—second place finishers to Valley View in District 63—were too much for Vets, perhaps benefitting from their bi-district victory over Port Isabel.
The Lady Patriots fell to Valley View, 2-0.
Mission experienced a surprise loss in their bi-district game, losing 3-1 to Laredo United. La Joya played hard against District 29’s top team Del Rio, before losing 3-2. The Coyotes postseason appearance was their first since their regional semifinal in 2008.
In other news for teams around the Rio Grande Valley, mixed results were received. For the boys, Brownsville Porter, Donna, Brownsville Lopez, Brownsville Rivera, Valley View and Roma all won their recent games. In a potential epic matchup Valley View and Roma will face each other in sectionals.
For the girls, Memorial, Nikki Rowe, Harlingen, Los Fresnos, Roma and Weslaco East are all moving on. In a surprise loss, McHi lost to Laredo United by a 4-1 decision. Last year, the Lady Bulldogs made it to the regional quarterfinals.blog comments powered by Disqus
