Editor’s Note: The Big Six Rankings have changed.
Instead of ranking the top three teams of a sport for both the boys and the
girls, we will now rank the top six teams but encompassing all the sports. The
rankings will be based on which team is playing the best and appears to have
the best outlook for the foreseeable future. Now that the spring sports season
is upon us, the rankings will be based on baseball, softball, track and field,
boys and girls soccer, etc.
Today’s Big Six Rankings:
School and Sport: Sharyland Boys Basketball
Overall/District Record: 24-10, 12-1.
Team Notes: With their 11-point win over La Joya,
along with Rowe’s Tuesday night loss to Memorial, the Rattlers are officially
the sole champs of District 30-5A. Further, David Keith’s squad has won 12
straight games.
Next Up: vs. McHi, Feb. 14; vs. Laredo Nixon(?), TBA.
School and Sport: Palmview Boys Wrestling
Overall/District Record: District 31 Champs
Team Notes: Though their showing at the Region IV
Championships were not ideal, the Lobos should still be feeling great for their
back-to-back district championships. In addition, Christian Garza will be
representing the Lobos at the state tournament in Austin.
Next Up: State Tournament in Austin, Feb. 24-25.
School and Sport: Juarez-Lincoln Girls Wrestling
Overall/District Record: District 31 Champs
Team Notes: Led by Mallely Aleman, Dane Sanchez
and Jacqueline Mendoza, the Lady Huskie wrestlers beat out Rio Grande City and
La Joya for the district championship in La Grulla about a week ago. Sanchez
went on to place second at the Region IV Tournament while Aleman placed fifth.
Next Up: State Tournament in Austin, Feb. 24-25.
School and Sport: Veterans Memorial Girls
Overall/District Record: 27-10, 16-2.
Team Notes: Overall, it was a great regular
season for the Lady Patriots. Whether Ralph Cantu’s team can take home a
bi-district win over Corpus Christi Moody.
Next Up: vs. Moody in Bishop, Feb. 14.
School and Sport: Palmview Boys Basketball
Overall/District Record: 23-6, 9-4.
Team Notes: For the first time ever the Lobos are
headed to the playoffs. The clincher came Friday when Andy Saenz’s squad took
down McHi in a season sweep.
Next Up: vs. Memorial, Feb. 14; Bi-District, TBA.
School and Sport: Sharyland Girls Basktball
Overall/District Record: 22-11, 11-3.
Team Notes: The Lady Rattlers take on Laredo
Nixon tonight. The senior-laden team has high hopes as Clarissa Suarez,
Savannah Prichard, Laura Eberly and Monica Salinas look to make a difference.
Next Up: vs. Nixon, tonight.
