20111007_Football_Sharyland_v_Palmview_spd_011This Friday, when the Palmview Lobos take the field on their home turf against McHi (5-3), the key will be consistency. After an up and down season that began with two impressive wins against Rio Grande City and Brownsville Porter but more recently has seen the Lobos drop three in a row, Palmview (4-4) find themselves still with an outside shot at making the playoffs.

The Lobos’ recent woes may be misleading. Two of their last three games and subsequent losses have come against two of the more powerful teams in the area, Sharyland and Donna, both of whom began the season scorching hot and undefeated through their first four games.

Palmview Head Coach Manuel Flores is looking for some consistency from his team after their last game against Donna, which saw the Lobos hang tough against a Redskin team that was out for blood.

“We were able to move the ball against Donna pretty well,” said Coach Flores. “We just made mistakes at critical points in the ballgame which we’ve battled with throughout the season. We’ve been plagued with inconsistencies on both sides of the ball.”

The mistakes Flores is referring to were three turnovers the Lobos committed, all of which resulted in putting points on the board for Donna. To make matters worse, two of the turnovers happened in the red zone and one those came with only four minutes left in the fourth quarter.

20111007_Football_Sharyland_v_Palmview_spd_003This is not to say Flores doesn’t remain optimistic about his team’s progress.

“We continue to grow,” said Flores. “Defensively, we’ve caught up with our offense and we’ve been able to play teams tough. It’s just a matter of putting complete games together, which we haven’t been able to do.”

The Lobos have picked a tough week to iron out inconsistencies. McHi is coming off their third straight district win, a 38-3 dismantling of the La Joya Coyotes. Coach Flores’ defense will have their hands full. The Bulldogs have scored 30 points or more in six of their eight games this season, including 38 against still-unbeaten McAllen Memorial.
