20110930-Sharyland-v-Donna-Football-dy-062-SmallMISSION - It wasn’t easy, but the Sharyland Rattlers took home a last second win over visiting Donna last night, 17-15. Joey Martinez’s 49-yard field goal as time ran out gave the Rattlers their second district win and their first close game of the season.

Donna pounded the ball all night, running the clock and keeping Shary’s offense off the field as the Rattlers only had the ball three times in the first half. The beginning drive was the best for quarterback Tres Barrera and his teammates. Using short pass routes, draws and zone read runs, Barrera marched his squad down the field efficiently.

However, it would be Barrera’s backup quarterback who completed the drive, albeit on a trick play. When the Rattlers faced a fourth down  at the 21-yard line, the special teams naturally set up shop for a Martinez field goal. Unbeknownst to Donna was Estefan Castillo lined up on the left wing. When the ball snapped, Castillo ran to the ball, received it from the place holder and then rolled out before hitting a wide open Kenny Normand for a touchdown.

20110930-Sharyland-v-Donna-Football-dy-111-SmallThe Rattlers would not move the ball again until the beginning of the third. Shary received the opening kick of the third quarter and immediately gave the Redskins a taste of their own medicine, pounding the ball behind Cesar Valedez, who eventually capped the long drive off with a two-yard run. The drive by Shary took six minutes off the clock and gave his team a 14-3 lead.

Despite the firm lead, things would change quickly, starting with the weather. Lighting to the south forced the two teams to take head to the locker room until it cleared up. When the squads hit the field again, the Redskins came out punishing, scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take the lead. Unfortunately, both touchdowns were not accompanied by extra-points as Donna elected to go for two on both and subsequently missing each. However, Donna still had the lead, 15-14.

Shary, however, refused to be beaten. The Rattlers stayed strong and worked their way into field goal position behind receptions by CJ Cavazos and Ramsey Garza, allowing Martinez to do what he does best. The Rattlers are now 2-0 in district and 5-0 overall. Donna drops to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in district.

Other 30-5A Scores

Palmview 24 La Joya 10

The Lobos proved once again they are the pride of La Joya ISD after again taking down the Coyotes. La Joya got on the board first and held a 7-0 lead at half time before Palmview outscored their rivals 24-3 in the second half. Manny Flores’s squad are now 2-0 in district and have a big game against Sharyland next week. La Joya, meanwhile, has lost three straight and is 0-2 in district play. Next week they visit McAllen Memorial.

Memorial 41 Mission 14

The Mustangs are apparently doing everything they can to keep themselves clean for a date with the Rattlers in a couple weeks. Memorial beat up easily on the Mission Eagles to continue to be unbeaten. The Mustangs have La Joya next week before facing Sharyland on October 14. Mission, meanwhile, will look for its first win next week versus McHi.

Nikki Rowe 24 McHi 12

The Rowe Warriors responded well after last week’s humiliating 45-13 loss to Sharyland by taking down in-town rival McHi. The Warriors, however, have a tough matchup next week at Donna. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, host Mission

32-4A Scores

Veterans Memorial 28 Valley View 14

Veterans Memorial needed a break and they got one, beating district whipping boy Valley View, 28-14. David Gilpin’s squad will try to get to 3-2 in district when they welcome Roma to Tom Landry Stadium next week. The Tiger’s schedule doesn’t get any easier as they take on undefeated Edcouch-Elsa next week.

Edcouch-Elsa 47 Mercedes 3

The Yellow Jackets had no mercy for the Mercedes Tigers. E-E is still undefeated, pounding opponents along the way. The Tigers, meanwhile, only have one win on the season. Luckily that one win came in district play. Next week will be a do-or-die game when they take on Hidalgo. On their end Edcouch faces Valley View.

Weslaco East 36 Roma 7

The Wildcats gave Roma their second beating in a row, proving that the district title is likely to come down to either East or Edcouch. The two meet up three weeks from now for what should be an epic game. Meanwhile, East has a buy next week before taking on Veterans. Roma looks to rebound next week versus the Patriots.

Hidalgo 29 Juarez-Lincoln 7 (Thursday Night)

The Pirates are now 2-1 after losing their first district game to Veterans Memorial. Thursday’s night loss to Hidalgo, put the Huskies 1-3 in district. Juarez has a much needed bye next week.

Rio Grande City- bye week.
