EDINBURG - The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the 2011 Women's Athletics Fundraiser (WAF) Gala on Saturday October 8 will now be held at the historic Shary Mansion. The estate, now owned by UTPA, is located on 4915 N. Shary Road in Mission. The theme for the event will be “Black Tie & Tennies.” Guests are encouraged to wear their best formal attire along with their favorite pair of sneakers.
The event was also extended an additional hour, beginning at 7 p.m. and now ending at 10 p.m. Attendees will enjoy live music, a fashion show, and both a live and silent auction. Hors d'oeuvres will be served. Drinks including cocktails, beer and wine will also be served. Tickets for the event are $50 per person.
The Master of Ceremonies for the event will be Channel 5 News Anchor Letty Garza.
“We are excited to revive the Women's Athletic Fundraising Committee because this group has had a tremendous impact on the lives of our female Bronc student-athletes,” UTPA Associate Athletic Director for Student Services and Senior Woman Administrator Angela Hubbard said. “The Gala is going to be a fun and relaxing evening that benefits the scholarship budgets and provides additional competitive resources for all seven of our women's sport programs at UTPA.”
There are close to 100 female student-athletes that compete annually for the Broncs, and UTPA is dedicated to fully fund all seven women's athletic programs to the maximum scholarship level allowed by the NCAA. The commitment, however, requires events such as the WAF Gala to assist in supplementing the available budgets to make sure all women's sports at UTPA are fully funded. Contributions aid in additional summer financial aid, facilities, travel and equipment needs.
“This event provides a special opportunity for the community to meet and interact with the young ladies that compete for the Broncs and are the recipients of the Gala's success,” Hubbard added.
The live and silent auction is another highlight of the event and they feature some exciting items for all to bid on. The items include VIP tickets to the 2012 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic at Cowboys Stadium, a UTPA men's basketball travel package to Chicago, which includes tickets to UTPA's games versus Northwestern and DePaul, roundtrip airfare and lodging. Other prime auction items include a pair of tickets for the 2012 college football game between Alabama and Michigan at Cowboys Stadium, four tickets for the 2011 meeting between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma State Cowboys, and much more. A full listing of auction items will be available on UTPABroncs.com and more will be added periodically.
In addition to the event, and both auctions, the Broncs are also offering several attractive WAAF sponsorship opportunities for local businesses and organizations. Sponsorships include several benefits based upon the level contributed.
