MISSION - Jose "Joe" S. Longoria, 86, passed away Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 at his residence in Mission. He was born to Diego and Maria S. Longoria, Sr. on Sept. 3, 1925 in Granjeno.
He served during World War II as part of the 75th Infantry Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He married his wife, Eulalia "Lala" F. Longoria, in 1950 and attended Edinburg College receiving a bookkeeping degree. He spent 30 years working with Central Power and Light Company until his retirement in 1981. Upon retirement, they established Country Breeze RV Park north of Mission.
Mr. Longoria was a member of the Catholic War Veterans Post #1065 and served as post commander in the early 1960s. He also served as a Boy Scout troop leader, a member of the Cursillistas, and a eucharistic minister.
Survivors include his wife, Lala; children, Sylvia Wolf, Javier Longoria, Rolando Longoria, and Jaime Longoria; sister, Minerva Gonzales of Cathedral City, CA; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Diego Longoria Jr. and Juan O. Longoria; and grandson, Jaime A. Longoria.
A funeral Mass was held Jan. 2 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission. Interment followed at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
Pallbearers were James, Joel, Anthony and Joseph Longoria, James Adair, and Robert Longoria. Honorary pallbearers were Arturo Guerra, Eleazar Longoria, Arturo Longoria, Marvin Wolf, Romulo Martinez and members of Catholic War Veterans Post #1065.
