Mission –Sylvia Anna Eckroat, 98, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen.
Mrs. Eckroat was born in Ramosia, Kansas on Oct. 28, 1913, to Joseph Charles and Anna Emily Pospisil. They moved to the Valley in Nov. of 1930 when she was 18 years old. She took postgraduate classes at La Joya High School. She later worked for attorneys in Mission and Edinburg and packed citrus fruit for extra money.
Mrs. Eckroat was a long-time member of The Pasttime Club of Mission where she and other members made product costumes for the Texas Citrus Fiesta Style Show, drying, pulverizing and gluing products all in her kitchen. She was also a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church Altar Society.
She is survived by children, Louis Eckroat of Mission and Rosann Eckroat Pebley of McAllen, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Frank Henry Eckroat; son, Kenneth Eckroat; and sister. Leona Jones.
A funeral Mass was held Dec. 19 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission. Burial followed at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission. Services were under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Building fund, or the charity of one’s choice.
