La Joya ISD to knock on drop-out doors

LA-JOYA-LOGOLa Joya ISD Office of Student Services Drop Out Prevention Division in conjunction with community volunteers, will be knocking door-to-door at homes of children who have dropped out Saturday.

Staff members from various departments, and volunteers will meet at La Joya High School cafeteria at 8:30 a.m. to organize a daylong block walking effort throughout the neighborhoods of La Joya ISD.

Volunteers from school and the community will be looking at district drop out data, identifying dropout students and visiting their homes to educate them about the importance of staying in school. This initiative is done with the goal of brining students back to the classroom and giving them the opportunity to graduate from high school.

Recently, College and Career Center High School, a non-traditional setting school dedicated to students who have dropped out and come back to graduate years later, graduated it’s 1,000th graduate.

Efforts like this, Knock on Drop Out Doors, have allowed La Joya ISD to reduce its drop out rate to less than 3 percent, down from double-digit numbers in 2007.

For more information, contact the public relations office at (956) 323-2585, or the Division of Drop Out Prevention with Armando Ocaña at (956) 323-2685.
