20130802 Mission Night OutMISSION – Mission Police Department and Mission Crime Stoppers will host their 18th Annual National Night Out on August 6. The event will be held at Leo Pena La Placita Park, across from H-E-B on Conway at Bus. 83, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. This year is the 30th anniversary of National Night Out events across the United States.

The event will feature food, entertainment and information from local non-profit organizations such as Women Ministries, Food Bank RGV, Mission Food Pantry and Mujeres Unidas/Women Together. Mission Crime Stoppers and MPD’s victim assistance representatives will also be at the event. The police department and Crime Stoppers will be handing out free school supplies to the children.

Other area police departments will also sponsor and participate in the event, including Palmview, Peñitas, Sullivan City, La Joya, La Joya Indepdent School District, Alton and Palmhurst. Other participants include the Department of Public Safety, Border Patrol, FBI, Mission CISD, Sharyland ISD, Mission Fire Department, CASA, American Cancer Society and many more.

A parade, or caravan, of law enforcement vehicles and fire trucks will start the event. The caravan will begin at Bannworth Park on Shary Rd., come down 495 and then head south down Conway to La Lomita Plaza.

According to National Night Out’s website, the event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Interim Police Chief Robert Dominguez said this event is for the police department to work together with their residents and neighbors to help prevent crime in their neighborhoods.

“We want them to look out for each other,” said Dominguez. It’s all about bringing them together.

Last year, approximately 1,000 bags and backpacks were passed out by Mission Crime Stoppers. Pct. 3 Constable’s Office also passed an additional 1,000 bags and City of Palmhurst Police passed out 500 bags.

Mission PD will pass out at least 1,000 bags, if not more, this year. Other cities participating in the event this year have also been invited to pass out school supplies to the community.

Donations of school supplies and money are still being accepted until the date of the event. Any monetary donation will be used to purchase school supplies. Donations can be dropped off at the Mission Police Department. Items needed include crayons, pencils, scissors, markers, wide ruled paper, rulers, folders, glue, pens and erasers. Optional items sought are one-inch binders, dividers and highlighters.
