MISSION – The Crime Victim’s Unit of the Mission Police Department will be hosting a Crime Victim’s Vigil at Mission Police Department on Sunday, April 21. The event will honor the memory of victims lost to violent crimes as well as celebrate survivors of such crimes. The event will coincide with National Crime Victim’s Rights Week, which begins April 21.
This year’s event will also honor Christine Jaqueline “Jackie” Kalifa, 23, and mother of three, who was found dead at 2 ½ Mile Line and Moorefield roads with a bullet wound to her neck a year ago. An 18-year-old was charged with capital murder for the incident on April 20, 2012.
The event will start with a walk at 4 p.m. that will begin at the Police Department, proceed east to Bryan Road, turn south to First Street, west to Highland, and north back to the Police Department. The event will end with a vigil at 7 p.m., in remembrance of victims of violent crimes.
Just like last year, balloons with victims’ names on them will be released during the ceremony.
There will be free food and entertainment at the event. Entertainment will feature music groups including Sharyland High School’s folklorico group and Veterans Memorial High School’s mariachi and other live talent from area high schools will perform.
At least 30 agencies and organizations that advocate on the behalf of victims will be present with information booths at the event. Some of the organizations that will be present are Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Advocacy Center, Mission Police Department Victims Services, Estrella’s House, Texas Department of Transportation, Mujeres Unidas/Women Together and Child Protective Services.
The Police Department and Victims Services invites all families that have been victims of violent crime or who have lost someone in a violent crime to attend the event.
The Mission Police Department is located at 1200 E. 8th Street.
