MISSION—The Mission School Board recently approved construction of new paved parking lots at the Mission High School Girls Softball Field, Tom Landry Stadium and Leo Najo Baseball Park.
In August, the district purchased property to the east of the MHS girl’s softball complex to be used for parking space. Executive Director of Maintenance/Facilities/Construction Rick Rivera said the proposed parking lots would include areas just south of the Tom Landry Stadium visitor’s stands, the Leo Najo Baseball Park parking lot, and would address the levee area on the far south side.
Currently, parking at the girl’s softball complex is limited, which forces visitors to park on dirt and caliche, according to Rivera. The visitor’s side of Tom Landry Stadium and the Leo Najo Baseball Park does not have paved parking spaces or proper security lighting.
The board approved a contract with Javier Hinojosa Engineering, to move forward with the development and administration of parking lot construction at the MHS Girls Softball Field, Tom Landry Stadium and Leo Najo Baseball Park.
Teacher Dress Code
The board also discussed employee dress codes and policies. Superintendent Dr. Cornelio Gonzalez said members of the board discussed the dress code with legal counsel and were in agreement with the changes.
Board member Patty Bazaldua added she would like to hear more feedback from individual campuses.
“I still would like for administration if possible to please get a committee together with principals and staff at all of our campuses,” Bazaldua said. “Some principals mentioned it was still a little vague, so I think we should have more input and come back in March with a better description.”
The changes added to the dress code address proper hygiene, neat hair and hair length guidelines for men. Extreme or distracting hairstyles are not allowed. Principals had issues with the description of “natural hair colors” under hair coloring.
Gonzalez said the board would make an approval based on the feedback of the campus committee meetings.
Agenda items discussing the MHS Phase III Renovations Architectural Contract, Procurement Method for the MHS Construction Project and discussion with ERO Architects were tabled and moved to executive session.
