MISSION – The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) is organizing the first South Texas Outdoor Life Festival to be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 7 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park/World Birding Center.
This new all-day event will offer the community and visitors the opportunity to participate in a variety of outdoor activities from a 5K run, 1K Family Fun Run, 35-mile bike race, kayak race, community bike ride, and a 9.19-mile mountain bike race, all in one location and in one day. Each race will conclude with an awards ceremony for each of the divisions.
The South Texas Outdoor Festival will kick off at 7 a.m. with a5K Run. This will be a time trial race, giving participants a chance to measure their performance against the clock. This race is expected to draw approximately 300 runners from a 250-plus mile radius. Following the 5K run will be a free 1K Family Fun Run. The entire family is encouraged to participate in this fun run as an opportunity to promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle with the children.
The 35-mile bike race will begin at 8:30 a.m., allowing bikers to go all out and test their cycling skills in this fun and competitive race.
The second family-oriented event scheduled on this day is the Community Bike Ride. This is a free non-race bike ride for the entire family and is open to cyclists of all ages to enjoy the scenery and climate of the Rio Grande Valley.
Get ready for some competitive paddling as participants test their kayaking skills in the only kayak race in South Texas at 1 p.m. Kayaks will be provided, however, participants may choose to bring their own. This race is expected to draw approximately 35 participants.
The all-day event will culminate with a 9.19-mile mountain bike race at 5 p.m. Competitors are encouraged to test their biking skills against other top notch mountain bike racers at Mission’s Hike & Bike Trails on South Conway and Trinity Road. This race is expected to draw approximately 75runners from a 250-plus mile radius.
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park/World Birding Center is located at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Drive in Mission.
