SISD second high school plans moving forward

20120907 SISD New High School Site PlanMISSION – Sharyland Independent School District officials reported to the school board Tuesday that plans are moving along for the construction of the proposed second high school for the district. Groundbreaking for the new campus, located at Shary Rd. and 6 ½ Mile Line, is expected to take place within two months.

The school district is still waiting for some details to be finalized before starting construction on the site, letting out bids for the new high school is still planned for late September. The district is currently under contract for an additional five acres where a homestead is still sitting within the piece of property and an additional quarter-acre on the west side of proposed high school complex to be used for the exit onto Glasscock Road. The reason for this acquisition is due to major power line anchors in the path of the proposed exit. These two items are expected to be complete within the next two weeks.

The additional five acres will allow the sports facilities to be shifted towards the east side of the high school complex and provide additional parking for the Shary Road side.

The quarter-acre is being acquired by the district to allow adequate access onto Glasscock Road for school buses and larger vehicles. The right-of-way requested by McAllen included the future construction of a road that will travel around the perimeter of the school property and come back around the west side to connect with 6 ¼ Mile Line Road and Glasscock Road.

City of McAllen Planning and Zoning will have their next meeting on September 18 where SISD will submit their final subdivision plat plans.

Some construction that will be seen sooner than later includes relocating a buried canal that is in the path of the high school main buildings. The canal currently is located diagonally crossing the property where the new high school is to be built. The canal will be relocated to an easement north of the existing one, which will be between the sports facilities and main instructional facilities. This relocation must be done before construction of the new high school can take place. According to the agreement between the United Irrigation District and SISD, the relocation should take about eight weeks and will cost the district approximately $334,000.

The new high school is expected to open for SISD students by the 2014-2015 school year.
