MISSION—Mission City Council voted unanimously Monday, June 11, to amend the sign ordinance, increasing the size and height of changeable copy signs along the Expressway corridor.
The amendment changes regulations for changeable copy signs from a maximum height of 20 feet and a face size of 40 square feet to a maximum height of 50 feet and a maximum face size of 210 square feet.
The council members also approved a request by Bert Ogden to issue a changeable copy ground pole sign permit at 1400 E. Expressway 83. The sign Bert Ogden proposed is 49 feet, 6.5 inches tall and has a face of 203 square feet.
Council members also approved approximately $300,000 in purchases by the Mission Police Department that will be paid through Federal Drug Forfeiture accounts.
Mission Police Chief Martin Garza requested permission to purchase 70 portable radios. The department’s current radios are 16 years old and the manufacturer, Motorola, doesn’t make parts for the radios anymore, which Garza said are in constant need of repair. The total cost for the purchase is $270,032.
Garza also requested permission to purchase a new server for the police department for a cost of $30,490. The police department’s current server’s back-up disks are not operational, which makes the department unable to retrieve streaming video footage from marked patrol units. The Mission Police Department is required by a racial profiling law to have video available from traffic stops conducted by the Mission police officers.
In other business the council:
- Approved a conditional use permit for a two-lane Drive-thru service window for CVS Pharmacy at 2300 N. Conway Avenue;
- Wrote off a little more than $20,000 in uncollectable utility accounts and referred them to a collection agency;
- Approved an ordinance providing a four-way stop at the Paseo Encantado and Moorefield Road intersection in response to citizen concerns about heavy traffic.
