20120511_ELECTION_EarlyVotingCampaignWorkers_JB_5703MISSION — Thousands of local voters took advantage of early voting hours, according to figures from Mission and Sharyland school district and Mission’s City Council early voting totals.

Early voting began on April 30 and ended on Tuesday. Election Day is Saturday with polls opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m.

In the Mission City Council race, with two seats up for

 election, Place 2 incumbent Ruben Plata faces opposition from Rene De La Cruz and Place 4 incumbent Leo Olivarez has a single challenger, Dr. Armando O’caña.

According to totals supplied by the city, a total of 2,827 people participated in early voting. The highest voter turnout day was May 5 with 491 people voting.

Early voting totals were higher from the last election cycle in 2010 when voters were electing a candidate for mayor, two city council seats and the collective bargaining proposition. Then, early voting totals were over 4,000.

There are five Election Day polling sites. They include:

• Precincts 9 and 103: Bryan Elementary’s cafeteria, 1300 Elm Dr.

• Precincts 10, 82 and 102: Castro Elementary’s cafeteria, 200 S. Mayberry Rd.

• Precincts 28, 98, 186, 210, 218 and 219: Mission High School Old Gym, 1802 Cleo Dawson Dr.

• Precincts 29, 93, 94, 128, 145, 185, 187 and 208: Pearson Elementary’s cafeteria, 315 Holland Ave.

• Precincts 38, 63, 83, 188, 203, 204, 215, 220, 236 and 248: Mission Fire Station No. 3, 1804 N. Shary Rd.

In the school board election for the Mission school district, voters are making selections for four seats, one of them in an uncontested race.

In Place 2, incumbent Dr. Sonia Treviño faces Hector Gonzalez. Place 3 incumbent Moises “Moy” Iglesias faces two challengers, Patty Bazaldua and Romeo Sanchez. Place 4 incumbent Patricia O’Caña-Olivarez has opposition from Jorge Esquivel. Place 5 candidate J.C. Avila has no challengers.

School district officials said 497 mail-in votes were received and 2,380 people participated in early voting these past two weeks.

There are four different voting locations open on Saturday. They are as follows:

• Precincts 9 and 103: Bryan Elementary’s cafeteria, 1300 Elm Dr.

• Precincts 10, 63, 82 and 102: Castro Elementary’s cafeteria, 200 S. Mayberry Rd.

• Precincts 28 and 98: Mission High School Old Gym, 1802 Cleo Dawson Dr.

• Precincts 93, 94 and 204: Pearson Elementary’s cafeteria, 315 Holland Ave.

• Precincts 86, 88, 125, 183, 205, 218, 220, 243, 244, 247 and 248: Alton Elementary’s cafeteria, 205 N. Chicago Ave.

In the Sharyland Independent School District board election, incumbents Suzanne “Suzie” Peña and Fernando “Fred” Ramirez are vying for the two seats on the board along with Eduardo “Eddie” Montalvo.

In this election, voters are asked to make two selections on their ballot. They may elect to choose the same candidate twice.

According to the Hidalgo County Elections Website, 1,007 people participated in early voting.

Election Day polling sites are as follows:

• Precincts 38, 83, 164, 188, 193, 203, 215 and 231: Mission Fire Station No. 3, 1804 N. Shary Rd.

• Precincts 74, 84, 101, 165, 166, 167, 211, 212, 222 and 236: Garza Elementary, 5 Mile Line and Taylor roads.
