MISSION — The Mission Consolidated Independent School District (MCISD) celebrated its fifth year of participation in the AEP Texas SCORE Program, which helps schools save energy and money, by accepting a check for $43,549.
It is an incentive check earned through participation in the SCORE Program in 2011. Since joining the SCORE Program in 2007, MCISD has completed more than 30 qualifying energy efficiency improvement projects in school buildings, which will save the district more than $190,000 annually.
The SCORE Program provides no-cost facility improvement recommendations and financial incentives based on the total amount of energy the district will save. In 2011, the district installed energy efficient air conditioning and lighting systems in several schools. The new equipment will save nearly 721,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, which is equal to the carbon dioxide emissions of more than 56,000 gallons of gasoline, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculations.
“The program staff continuously meet with us to assist in identifying energy efficiency opportunities in our district,” said Ricardo Rivera, executive director of maintenance/facilities/construction. “Incentives can be reinvested in other energy saving initiatives such as replacement of old equipment, addition of solar screens, replacement of outdated thermostats/controls, and additional staff training in energy management. The actual money saved on energy costs is money the district has to use in classroom instruction.”
In addition to technical assistance, the program provides no-cost benchmarking and energy master planning services. MCISD benchmarked its facilities in 2007 and 2011, comparing each building against peer buildings in the local area and in other similar climates. This process helps officials determine highest priority projects and will guide future project plans.
Since starting the SCORE Program in 2007, MCISD has earned a total of $202,632 in incentives. The annual carbon impact of the various projects completed is equal to taking 257 cars off the road, or is equal to the carbon dioxide emissions of almost 147,000 gallons of gasoline, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculations.
Projects completed during 2011 that resulted in this year’s incentive include HVAC and lighting at Alton Elementary School, Leal Elementary School and Veterans Memorial High School; plus lighting projects at K. White Jr. High School, Waitz Elementary School and Roosevelt Alternative School.
