Church member April Mantle watched as the steeple was put in place on the foggy Friday morning. She explained she comes from many generations who have been members of the Mormon religion.
“My husband and I both come from many generations, we both have Mormon ancestor pioneers,” Mantle said.
Mantle was excited to see the steeple placed adding there is the need for a new structure to serve the area.
“We are so glad…the teenagers, kids between ninth- and 12th-grade, have seminary classes every school day at 6 a.m.,” Mantle said. “This makes it so much easier for students and teachers…we don’t have to drive to the church on 29th and Dove (streets).”
Project Superintendent Dan Ashment with Parkway Construction & Associates said the $3.8 million project covers 20,000 square feet.
“It has about 32 rooms…each room varies in size from small to large,” Ashment said. “The church builds to population, the needs of the community at that time. There has been a lot of growth in the Mission and McAllen area.”
Bryce Chandler explained the new church would house two congregations, nearly 450 people. Chandler added the church has been a long time coming and would be put to good use.
The new church is different in design with a lot of the budget designated for landscaping; the center of the church has also been designed to house a small garden with a water fountain, Ashement said.
Ashement does not reside in Mission but said he is part of the church in his home state of Wyoming. This allows him to have a better understanding of how the church should be made, and the needs of the different congregations in the area, he explained.
“Each congregation has its idiosyncrasies…they think ‘How do we need the job done?’ and ‘This is how we will do it,’” Ashment said.
