Monthly cultural attraction planned for downtown Edinburg

20110715-ENT_CAB---RommyThe Edinburg Cultural Activities Board (CAB) announces an event that is sure to liven up the city’s downtown area and connect the community to art, music, and culture. CAB members will soon kick off their monthly Jardin Del Arte, a free event that will offer music, art displays, and refreshments. The kickoff reception will be Friday, Aug. 12 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Edinburg City Hall at 415 W. University Drive.

Dr. Dahlia Guerra, CAB chair and dean of the College of Arts & Humanities at The University of Texas-Pan American, says, “The Jardin del Arte reception will be the first in a series of monthly gatherings that will showcase new and upcoming artists and musicians and will be held the second Friday of each month.”

The featured artist at the first Jardin Del Arte will be Rommy Guevara.

“The vision of the Edinburg Cultural Activities Board is for Edinburg to be the premier cultural destination where all can be enriched by, share in, and celebrate our diverse art and cultural history. We have a great team of creative, dedicated, and energetic citizens on the board,” added Guerra.

Besides the monthly Jardin Del Arte, the CAB is also planning a Culture Fest this fall, which organizers envision as an event that will draw visitors from all over South Texas.

Pedro Salazar, director of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, explains the importance of these types of events.

“Creativity and the exchange of new ideas drive economic growth and prosperity, and the arts play a critical role in creating the necessary environment for this to flourish,” said Salazar.
