20130913 MRMC-Gears-Up-Pink-WalkAs National Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws near, residents and businesses in the community are gearing up for the Fifth Annual MissionPink Walk/Run at Mission Regional Medical Center. The pink event is set for Saturday, Oct. 5.

Approximately 2500 walkers participated in last year's MissionPink event which has become one of the biggest events for breast cancer awareness in the Rio Grande Valley. This year, organizers are preparing for 2800 participants.

Packet pick-up is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the hospital. Entrants can also register in person during the packet pick-up that day or the morning of the walk.

To register, go online at www.MissionPink.org. All registered walkers get a free MissionPink T-shirt. For more information, call the MRMC marketing department at 323-1150 or email info@missionpink.org.

"People from all ages come to MissionPink," says Evelyn Sáenz, MRMC marketing coordinator. "It is a very family-friendly event that brings people together from all over the Valley, and even from Houston, Reynosa and Monterrey."

The MissionPink Walk attracts those passionate for the cause, like Rebecca Grimes from Mission. Grimes has been the team leader for the event's “Largest Team” award for the past three years.

"I am running for some amazing women who have been affected by breast cancer – my grandmother, my cousin and my aunt, whom we lost. Also, for two of my cousins, who are both survivors, and for another cousin who is currently fighting breast cancer."

A portion of the proceeds from this year's walk will provide free digital screening mammograms to local, uninsured women over age 40. The remaining will benefit The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center to support the hospital’s Breast Care Center and other charitable needs.

"Mission Regional Medical Center is grateful for the support and leadership of our sponsors, participants, staff and volunteers in this year’s MissionPink Walk/Run. Every year more and more people come and join us in this worthwhile and noble fight…," said Javier Iruegas, MRMC CEO. " I look forward to joining family and friends on Oct. 5 for a day full of fun and fitness to help in the battle against breast cancer."
