MISSION – The Palmview Lobos took a 12-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and didn’t look back in a 64-37 stomping of the Mission Eagles. The game was both teams first of district play in 30-5A.

Despite the wide margin of victory Lobo head coach Andy Saenz was disappointed by his team’s play, saying they lacked in execution and tried too much freelance play, settling for one-on-one play rather than running the system.

However, to the Eagles, whatever Palmview did, it worked. Lobo guard and leading scorer Mario De La Garza dropped four threes, with nearly all coming in the second quarter. Teammate Dominick Garza helped out as the team’s big man, providing rebounds, blocked shots and a nice touch on his shot that helped him get fifteen points, many of those coming in the third quarter.

Defensively the Lobos were sufficiently efficient. A full-court press in the second quarter gave Mission plenty of fits, causing turnovers and fast-break opportunities. The Eagle’s top player, as well as one of the district’s best, Peter Arizpe, struggled to get anything going. The normally smooth point guard couldn’t find his rhythm all night, scoring only 12 points.

Next up for Saenz’s squad will be rival La Joya. The game will be another test to see if Palmview can improve its execution. A win will match Palmview’s district win total from a year ago. However, this year’s version is well beyond last year’s team as they are a proficient shooting squad with a lot of confidence.

In spite of Friday’s lack of execution in a blowout win.

Game MVP

Mario De La Garza: 18 points behind four three-pointers. Wearing jersey number one, the shooter strokes threes with ease and possesses a confidence that breeds results.
